Arsenal lose derby to Spurs despite Özil goal

A third goal of the season from Mesut Özil wasn’t enough for Arsenal to avoid a 2-1 defeat and a setback in the race for the Champions League places. The 26-year-old World Champion put the Gunners in front away to Tottenham Hotspur in the North London derby, but a Harry Kane brace ensured the points stayed at White Hart Lane.

After previously going on a three-match winning run, Arsenal now drop below Spurs in the table, slipping to sixth. Mauricio Pochettino’s side have one point more and sit fourth for now.

Özil’s goal was a well-worked one. Danny Welbeck’s pull-back found Olivier Giroud, whose smart pass found the Germany international, and Hugo Lloris was unable to keep out a powerful finish under the crossbar. Özil impressed last week in his side’s 5-0 win over Aston Villa too, scoring a goal and assisting another. Fellow World Champion Per Mertesacker was solid at the back, but couldn’t prevent two goals from in-form Harry Kane.

Real beaten by Atletico again in Ronaldo comeback

Even with Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo back on board, Champions League winners Real Madrid were unable to beat defending Primera Division champions Atletico Madrid for the first time this season. World Champions Toni Kroos and Sami Khedira both started for the side that will face Schalke 04 in the last 16 of the Champions League but couldn’t prevent a 4-0 defeat. It was the sixth meeting between the Madrid rivals since the 2014 Champions League final and it was a fourth loss for Real (2 draws).

Real’s once comfortable lead over FC Barcelona at the top of the table is now down to just four points with one game more played. Atletico made their intentions clear early in the first half, with goals from Tiago and Saul Niguez putting Diego Simeone’s side 2-0 up inside 20 minutes.

The Champions League winners’ manager Carlo Ancelotti took off Khedira for Jese Rodriguez at half time, but without injured stars James Rodriguez (foot) and Sergio Ramos (hamstring) on board, they went on to suffer their fourth defeat of the season. Antoine Griezmann added a third goal, before former Bayern striker Mario Mandzukic wrapped up the scoring.
