World Cup winner Boateng announces retirement

World Cup winner Jérôme Boateng has announced the end of his playing career. “I’ve learned, I’ve won, I’ve lost,” said the 37-year-old in a video released on Friday evening. His last club was LASK in Austria.
Boateng made 76 senior international appearances for Germany, winning the World Cup as a regular starter in Brazil in 2014. He previously lifted the U21 European Championship trophy in 2009. In total, he played 15 times for the U21s and made a further 21 appearances for Germany’s youth teams, scoring five goals across his DFB career.
Serial winner with Bayern
Boateng played in the Bundesliga for Hertha BSC, Hamburger SV and Bayern Munich, and also had spells with Manchester City, Olympique Lyon and Salernitana.
His most successful period came with Bayern, where he won the Champions League twice, lifted the Bundesliga title nine times, and claimed five DFB-Pokal trophies. He also won the FIFA Club World Cup twice and was named Germany’s Footballer of the Year for the 2015/16 season.
