Sandro Wagner to leave DFB-Team in summer

Following discussions with Germany national team head coach Julian Nagelsmann, current assistant coach Sandro Wagner has decided to leave the DFB following the conclusion of the UEFA Nations League Final Four.
Wagner joined Julian Nagelsmann’s coaching staff alongside Benjamin Glück in September 2023. He had previously worked as an assistant coach for the Germany U20s under Hannes Wolf, who he also partnered with to assist then interim manager Rudi Völler for one senior international match following Hansi Flick’s departure. Wagner has been involved in the DFB’s 71st Pro Licence course since the start of the year and is set to obtain Germany’s highest coaching licence.
“On a personal level, I totally understand and respect Sandro’s desire to become a head coach,” said Julian Nagelsmann. “We’ve always had clear and transparent communication with each other regarding that. Sandro has been an asset to our team with his expertise and his personality. What started as a project for our home European Championship in 2024 has developed into a long-term and trustworthy collaboration alongside Benjamin Glück and the whole coaching staff, and now we want to finish that off with the Nations League title in Munich. I wish Sandro all the best for the next step that follows in his career.”
Völler: “He’s put all of his energy into it”
DFB sporting director Rudi Völler said: “Sandro has put all of his energy into his work at the DFB since the very beginning. I’ve already sensed that personally when he first worked as an assistant coach for the senior team under me against France. Sandro has developed immensely working alongside Julian Nagelsmann. The highlight was, without doubt, the EUROs in Germany last summer, and he played a huge part in how our team captured the hearts of the nation. I’m confident that we will see Sandro as a head coach on the touchline very soon. He will have a fantastic career.”
Sandro Wagner on his decision: “Working as an assistant coach for the Germany national team was and remains a huge privilege for me. I will always be grateful for this opportunity and am proud to have put so much in motion alongside this great coaching team. Above all, the EUROs at home will always remain an unforgettable experience for me. However, I want to take the next step soon. It’s no secret that my desire is to be a head coach myself one day. Starting my pro coaching licence in January has only made that clearer for me, and I’ve been very open in my communication with everyone involved at the DFB, which has always been positive. I’m very grateful for their understanding. Now we can work together with full focus on our next goal: winning the Nations League on home soil. I will give my all to make that happen.”
