SSV Jeddeloh II produced the shock of the DFB-Pokal first round on Sunday. The fourth-tier side ran out emphatic 5-2 winners over 2. Bundesliga side 1. FC Heidenheim to become the first team from Germany’s fourth tier to reach round two. In the other early game, VfL Bochum won the all-2. Bundesliga contest away to SpVgg Greuther Fürth 2-1.

Jeddeloh cause Sunday’s big shock

The underdogs made a fearless start at Oldenburg’s Marschweg-Stadion and passed up a huge chance to take an early lead. Tom Kanowski was completely unmarked at the far post but his header hit the post (7’). Heidenheim punished that miss almost immediately with their first opportunity. Marvin Pieringer got past Kanowski on the left byline and cut the ball back for the arriving Yannik Wagner, who swept home from close range (12’). Jeddeloh were unfazed and hit back straight away. Heidenheim failed to clear a long throw and the loose ball fell to Kamer Krasniqi, who curled a delightful finish into the far corner (14’).

The game opened up and Jeddeloh turned it around with two goals in quick succession. Jan Schöppner’s attempted clearance from a Krasniqi cross ended up in his own net (27’), before Haris Hyseni made it 3-1 with a superb strike from the edge of the box that flew into the top corner beyond Frank Feller (29’). Heidenheim had a big chance to pull one back after the break when substitute Budu Zivzivadze was brought down by Gazi Siala. The striker took the resulting penalty himself, but Moritz Onken comfortably held the Georgian’s weak effort (58’).

Instead, Jeddeloh made it 4-1 from the spot at the other end. Feller brought down Tim Janßen and Hyseni sent the goalkeeper the wrong way before rolling his penalty into the opposite corner (70’). Janßen added a fifth just two minutes later, latching on to a long ball in behind, keeping his composure one-on-one and slipping his finish through Feller’s legs (72’). Mikkel Kaufmann pulled one back for Frank Schmidt’s side late on (89’), but it made no difference as Jeddeloh celebrated a famous win to huge applause from the stands.

Bochum edge Fürth

The only first-round meeting between two sides from the same division took time to get going, with few chances early on. Bochum then scored with the first real opening of the game. Maximilian Wittek played a diagonal ball into the box from the left and Jannis Heuer’s attempted clearance inadvertently diverted it into Christian Rasmussen’s path, whose shot found its way into the Fürth net with the aid of a deflection (25’). Felix Klaus had a chance to level soon afterwards, but Timo Horn got a hand to his low effort and turned it away (29’). Bochum took a 1-0 lead into half time after Berkan Taz passed up a chance to double their advantage (37’) and Horn denied Shinta Appelkamp at the other end (40’).

Fürth had the first chance after the restart, but Sacha Bansé fired well wide (58’). Uwe Rösler’s side then doubled their lead through Philipp Hofmann in the 64th minute, as the former Fürth striker’s effort bounced over Florian Hellstern and into the top corner. Fürth pushed more men forward from there. Appelkamp missed their best chance to pull one back from close range (69’), before Horn denied Bansé (70’). Substitute Maxim Dal finally reduced the deficit in the 77th minute, heading in Luca Itter’s corner from inside the six-yard box. Lukas Reich (90’) and Dennis Srbeny (90’+7) then missed Fürth’s final chances to force an equaliser.
