1-1 against Slovakia after conceding late in Euro qualifier
The German U19 juniors missed out on all three points in last second of their opening qualifier for the European Championships. Marcus Sorg’s team threw away their lead in injury team against Slovakia.
FC Ingolstadt’s Max Christiansen scored his second goal in his ninth appearance for the U19s, to put Germany ahead in the 19th minute at the Carl-Benz-Stadion in Mannheim. The young German side missed the opportunity to bury the game sooner and were punished late as a result. Tomas Vestenicky (AS Roma) equalised for Slovakia in the third minute of injury time.
“It’s unlucky to concede in injury time”, said Sorg. “Ultimately, we didn’t keep the ball well enough in the second half and we didn’t give each other enough options. We lacked composure and dominance. But it’s still in our hands and now we want to go and win against Ireland.”
Later this afternoon (17:00 CET), Ireland and the Czech Republic will face each other in the other fixture in group two. The U19s still have to face Ireland in Sandhausen on Saturday (12:00 CET) and the Czech Republic on Tuesday in Walldorf (12:00 CET) in their bid for a play in the summer’s competition.
