The Germany women’s national team kicked off their season with an entertaining 4-2 win over Australia in Karlsruhe. Head coach Christian Wück and his players reflected on the game and their individual performances afterwards. DFB.de has rounded up the post-match reaction.

Christian Wück: We started very well, but you could also see just how much quality Australia have. What frustrates me is that we let them back into the game just before half-time. That can’t be allowed to happen, and it probably explains why the second half was much more even. The girls stood up to the challenge and we got the win in the end, which is what matters. The average age of the team today was 24. You can see how hungry the girls are, and we can bring so much quality off the bench as well.

Melissa Kössler: We can be happy with tonight. We wanted to try a few things and managed to put a lot of them into practice. I felt a bit bad about the first goal – I hope I didn’t steal it off Franziska (Kett). I’m glad I managed to get the second one as well. I’m very happy with my performance. Towards the end, though, we need to stay more compact and manage the game better.

Cora Zicai: I’m really grateful to have been given the chance to start. I just told myself to enjoy it and get some minutes under my belt. It was a relief to be back involved. Having Carlotta (Wamser) behind me gave me confidence because I knew I could rely on her if I ever got caught out.
