World Cup underway: Germany U17s win thanks to Gwinn and Bühl

The Germany women’s U17s opened their World Cup campaign with victory over Venezuela. Head Coach Anouschka Bernhard’s side deservedly beat the South Americans in their opening World Cup game and took their first step towards the knockout stages.

Guilia Gwinn put the European champions ahead with a fine volley in the 7th minute in a match witnessed by approximately 1,500 spectators. Venezuela were able to build some momentum during periods of the match and Maria Cazorla took advantage, netting the equaliser in the 61st minute. But after a sublime pass from Gewinn, her fellow Freiburg teammate Klara Bühl grabbed the winner in the 74th minute.

The team’s upcoming group games take place on Monday in Amman against Canada and next Friday in Al Zarqa against Cameroon.

Gwinn’s goal provides some breathing space

The Germans immediately looked like they were enjoying their football, getting forward straight away and were rewarded with a goal from the edge of the penalty area early on. Gwinn met a long ball with a first time volley and the ball bounced into the far corner. The SC Freiburg midfielder should have extended their lead in the 13th minute but she could not quite get her head to what was an enticing cross.

The Venezuelans almost leveled the scoring after a quarter of an hour following some good pressure. But Bernhard’s team then took control and showed their superiority in both the speed of their play and the number of chances they created.

Germany picked up where they left off at the start of the second half. After an excellent pass from Klara Bühl in the 53rd minute, Gwinn’s effort was only just parried away by Venezuela keeper Alex Castro. The South Americans then stepped it up a gear and were unfortunate not to score through Deyna Castellanos’ 58th minute free-kick, which rattled off the crossbar. But Cazorla made it all square just three minutes later, getting to the ball just fractions ahead of her challenger.

Perfect response to conceding

The team worked hard and reacted positively after conceding the goal. A 71st minute header from Tanja Pawollek from a free-kick flew just inches wide of the post. But Bühl went one better only three minutes later with what ended up being the match-winner. Verena Wieder missed a great chance to make the victory certain in the 77th minute, when she dinked it over the keeper but also over the empty net. The Venezuelans fell apart after Sandra Luzardo was sent off for a second yellow in the 87th minute and the victory was never in doubt from then on.

Lena Sophie notably became the first 14-year-old to make an appearance for the Germany women’s U17s after she was brought on in the 67th minute.

The teams that finish in the top two of the group will go through to the quarter-final. The final will take place on 21st October in Amman.
