Womens national team: Germany take bronze

World champions Germany defeated Sweden 1-0 to take the Olympic women's football bronze medal.

Germany, who defeated Sweden in Los Angeles last year to become world champions, took a deserved lead in the 17th minute. Conny Pohlers stormed down the left flank and cut the ball back for Lingor whose side-footed shot lacked power, but slipped through the fumbling fingers of Caroline Joensson.

Joensson atoned for her error moments later by tipping Birgit Prinz's powerful header onto the bar. Although Germany, bronze medallists in Sydney four years ago, enjoyed the lion's share of possession, they faded in the closing stages and only some excellent goalkeeping from Silke Rottenberg kept their lead intact.
