Wolfsburg vs. Hannover: Their first cup derby for 30 years

VfL Wolfsburg and Hannover 96 are playing each other in the DFB-Pokal. On 29th August 1987, “The Wolves” beat Hannover 3-0 in the first round. Now, 30 years later, we finally have a cup rematch between the two sides. On Wednesday (18:30), Wolfsburg will be hosting Hannover in the Volkswagen Arena in the second round of the DFB-Pokal.

“It’s definitely not the easiest draw we could have had” said VfL keeper, Koen Casteels. “But it’s a great fixture and should be a great derby. It’s a game that a lot of people are really looking forward to”. U21 European Champion, Maximilian Arnold added: “It’s very good that we are playing at home. We’re all really looking forward to the game”.

Rebe: “You know it’s going to be a crunch match”

Wolfsburg last won the cup two and a half years ago. In May 2015, they beat Borussia Dortmund 3-1 in the final. In the two tournaments since then, Wolfsburg have twice gone out to Bayern Munich. Now, to make it into the next round and continue their bid for the cup, Wolfsburg need to overcome newly promoted Bundesliga side, Hannover 96. “We are looking forward to it, especially as we are playing at home,” said Wolfsburg Sporting Director, Olaf Rebbe. “When you meet a Bundesliga side in round two, you know it’s going to be a crunch match”.

In the first round of this year’s Pokal, Wolfsburg found things a bit difficult. The team, still coached by Andries Jonker at the time, beat fourth tier side Eintracht Norderstedt 1-0, thanks to Ignacio Camacho’s headed goal. Hannover, on the other hand, scored quite a few more goals, as they beat Bonner SC 6-2. André Breintenreiter’s side were only winning 3-2 heading into the closing stages, however three goals in injury time put the victory beyond all doubt.
