Wolfsburg lead at the halfway point - Bayern draw with Essen

VfL Wolfsburg came out on top in the battle for the autumn championship with a 2-0 win over 1. FFC Frankfurt in the today’s most eye catching game. Victory saw them go top of the table. They will stay top over the course of the winter break as FC Bayern München drew 0-0 with SGS Essen so didn’t do enough to return to the summit. Wolfsburg lead the way in the Women’s Bundesliga with 29 points, followed by Bayern München (27). Frankfurt sit in third place with 25 points behind them on goal difference.

After a balanced opening 30 minutes, in which the guests had the better of the chances after a long-range effort from Veronica Boquete and Simone Laudehr rattling the woodwork, Martina Müller got the Wolves on the winning track. The 101-capped Germany international latched onto a perfect pass from Alexandra Popp from an acute angle. It was her seventh goal of the campaign. VfL then took more control of the game against a nervy Frankfurt side and increased their lead before half-time. Germany international Lena Goeßling’s free kick from the left flank missed everyone and found its way into Anke Preuß’ net. Anna Blässe almost added a third shortly after the break but her attempt went just over the crossbar.

Potsdam victors in Eastern derby against Jena

FFC Turbine Potsdam lie in fourth place with 25 points after their 3-2 win over FF USV Jena in the Eastern derby. Turbine opened the scoring through Pauline Bremer, with Amber Hearn doubling the hosts’ advantage just before the break. Christina Julien replied for UV after the interval with Inka Wesely bagging the equaliser. Julia Simic converted from the spot after a handball in the Jena box to hand Potsdam all three points.

Bayer Leverkusen were 2-1 winners over SC Sand and racked up their second successive win despite the numerical disadvantage. Rebecca Knaak was shown red in the 22nd minute and Sand got on the scoresheet three minutes later through Anne van Bonn. Bayer 04 turned the game on its head after the break though thanks to goals from Marina Hegering and Carolin Simon.

Freiburg claim local bragging rights

SC Freiburg ended their run of bad results after seeing off their local rivals 1899 Hoffenheim with a 1-0 home win. Sylvia Arnold handed manager Dietmar Sehrig’s side a win in the 17th minute to leap to sixth place and end their run of three consecutive defeats. Hoffenheim drop down to seventh place with 14 points.

There was late drama in the game between MSV Duisburg and Herforder SV. The bottom two met on Sunday and a last minute winner saw MSV Duisburg grab their first win of the season. HSV took the lead shortly before the hour mark through Lena Wermelt but goals from Dolores Silva (70’) and Kristina Sundov (89’) sealed victory for the “Zebras.”
