Under 21: Sweden defeat Germany 2-1

In their second game of group stage B of the European Under 21 Championship the German squad suffered a 1-2 (0-0) defeat against Sweden in Mannheim on Sunday.

Jon Jönsson broke the tie in the second period with a shot from 22 metres (49th min.). Only thirteen minutes later the Swedish squad scored their second goal. Alexander Farnerud swung in a cross which was headed by Samuel Holmen. Although Tim Wiese did exceptionally well to claw the ball away from the top corner, Johan Elmander reacted quickest to prod in.

Benjamin Auer gave some late hope for Germany when he scored from a cross by Christoph Preuß (84th min.). The substitute cleverly turned past Patrik Gerrband with his right foot before shooting low past Johan Wiland with his left. But Auer‘s goal was too late although the German squad tried to pile on the pressure during the last moments of the match.

Although forward Lukas Podolski was able to play after being absent in the first game against Switzerland (2-1) due to a pulled muscle the team of German headcoach Ulli Stielike was not able to fight fire with fire as Stielike promised, especially in the middle of the second period when Sweden went for their win.

After their second victory in the final stage of the tournament Sweden claimed their lead of group B with six points. Germany (3 points) now need at least a tie against Portugal on Wednesday (18.15h) in order to reach the semi-finals.
