U19 youngsters draw 0-0 against Switzerland

The Germany U19 side played out a goalless draw against a Switzerland representative side in the first warm-up match ahead of the start of their European Championship qualification campaign next month. The match in Fribourg against the Swiss team was the first tough test for the team managed by Meikel Schönweitz. On Tuesday (20:45 CEST), the youngsters play in Mansfield against England. The first three European qualifiers take place between the 4th and 10th of October, with the side coming up against Northern Ireland (4/10), Belarus (7/10) and Poland (10/10).

In Fribourg, the young Germany team dominated early proceedings but the Swiss held firm and also had chances of their own and Schönweitz commented on the first half: “we had a few problems in the first half and the balance between defence and attack could’ve been better. You could tell that the team haven’t been playing together for very long.”

The game remained open in the second half and the tempo was high but the heavy rain made it extremely tough for both sides. Both outfits lacked the accuracy in their shots on goal and the keepers were rarely troubled. “We got more of a grip on the game in the second half and we had two clear-cut chances to win the game in the latter stages but in the circumstances, it is a decent result. It was an intense game and they pushed us hard, but it was good preparation,” Schönweitz said after the game. Now the team move on to England next Tuesday.
