“Towards a Sustainable EURO 2024” at Frankfurt forum

The DFB’s application for EURO 2024 should set down a marker for sustainable football development, as well as promote transparency and comply with Good Governance.

In the application to host the tournament for the first time since 1988, Germany will present a wide-ranging case to UEFA. The DFB will showcase the country’s modern arenas, broad infrastructure and draw on Germans’ love of the game, but there will also be a focus on sustainability. Not just football, but many strands of society, would benefit from the application. The EURO would operate on an appropriate budget while be organised so as to ensure a low environmental impact. It would also engage with, and promote, societal issues like integration, diversity, mobility, nutrition, environment and accessibility. The DFB’s ‘Bid Book’ for EURO 2024 will be written with sustainability as a defining principle.

Around 70 representatives from a variety of stakeholder groups like politics, society, economy and sport have been invited by DFB president Reinhard Grindel and general secretary Dr Friedrich Curtius to take part in a forum for the country’s application. “Towards a Sustainable EURO 2024” will be held at the DFB headquarters in Frankfurt. German society should experience, and play a large role in, the application process, while the opportunities for German communities should be identified. From there more concrete projects can be initiated. Finally, themes like diversity, environment, health, Fair Play and human rights will be promoted.
