The title race goes on

André Hahn’s late strike prevented FC Bayern München from claiming the Bundesliga title on matchday 32. The Germany international grabbed an equaliser for Borussia Mönchengladbach with 18 on the clock. Bayern remain top of the table, five points clear of Dortmund, but will now need to wait until next week at the earliest to be crowned champions.

World Cup winner Thomas Müller had given the record champions the lead just six minutes into the game, however, they were unable to see the match out. The result means that Gladbach remain in the mix for the European spots, although a win would have suited them better in their question for a Champions League place.

Dortmund romp to victory

Thomas Tuchel’s men remain the only Bundesliga side without a defeat in 2016. BVB comfortably beat VfL Wolfsburg 5-1 on Saturday afternoon to increase the pressure on Bayern at the top of the table.

They got off to a flyer and were 2-0 up inside 10 minutes thanks to goals from Shinji Kagawa (7’) and Adrian Ramos (9’). The floodgates opened after the break, with Marco Reus (59’) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (77’, 78’) getting on the act. André Schürrle netted for the visitors with four minutes left on the clock but it proved to be nothing more than a consolation.

Frankfurt win again

Eintracht Frankfurt claimed the points, the bragging rights and a new lease of life in the relegation fight thanks to a crucial 2-1 victory over local rivals Darmstadt in today’s Hesse derby. The teams are now split by just two points.

The victory means that the Eagles have climbed into the relegation play-off spot, but they could slip back into the drop zone if Bremen beat fellow strugglers Stuttgart. Eintracht’s goals came courtesy of Makoto Hasebe (56’) and Stefan Aigner (83’). The hosts took the lead early on via Mario Vrancic (12’).

Big win for Schalke

The Royal Blues beat Hannover 96 3-1 on Saturday afternoon to remain in the race for the Champions League spots. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (11’), Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (45’) and Alessandro Schöpf (79’) scored for Andre Breitenreiter’s men. Artur Sobiech scored for the Reds.

Another step towards safety for Hoffenheim

Julian Nagelsmann’s TSG 1899 Hoffenheim climbed into 13h place thanks to their impressive 2-1 victory over FC Ingolstadt 04 on Saturday afternoon. They remain unbeaten at home under the new head coach, taking an impressive 16 out of a possible 18 points in the process. Mark Uth (37’) and Nadiem Amiri (84’) scored for the hosts. FCI, who are without a win in five, haven’t claimed a victory on the road since September 2015.

TSG’s win could have been more emphatic but Andrej Kramaric’s penalty was saved by Örjan Nyland shortly after the break. Ingolstadt had gone in front in the first half thanks to a goal from Stefan Lex (17’).

HSV close to guaranteeing survival

Hamburger SV drew 0-0 with Mainz 05 on Saturday afternoon and in the process all but confirmed their place in next season’s Bundesliga. The result doesn’t help the 05ers much – their Champions League hopes are now realistically extinguished and they now need to focus on claiming a Europa League spot.
