Ter Stegen saves penalty, Messi on form, Barca thrash Celtic

Germany goalkeeper Marc-André Ter Stegen and FC Barcelona romped to victory in their first UEFA Champions League fixture of the season as the Spanish Champions defeated Celtic 7-0 at the Nou Camp. Arsenal and World Champions Shkodran Mustafi, Mesut Özil and Per Mertesacker drew 1-1 with Paris Saint-Germain.

Lionel Messi lead an attacking masterclass as he grabbed a hat-trick. Neymar, Andreas Iniesta got on the scoresheet as well, and Luis Suarez rounded off the scoring with a brace while Ter Stegen watched on. The former Borussia Mönchengladbach man brought down Moussa Dembelé in the 23rd minute but made amends for his mistake by saving the resulting penalty to stop the Scottish Champions bringing themselves level. Messi then doubled Barca’s lead from the following attack.

Trapp observed from the bench as his team did almost everything right in Paris. Edinson Cavani had brought the hosts ahead with a header in the first minute of the game, the first goal of this season’s competition. However, Alexis Sánchez popped up ten minutes from full time with an equaliser for the visitors. Germany goalkeeper Kevin Trapp didn’t make an appearance with Alphonse Aréola donning the gloves for the French Champions. There was even more late drama as well as both Marco Verratti and Olivier Giroud were given their marching orders for second bookable offences just before the final whistle.
