"Team of the Year" award for German nationals

As the year is winding down, Germany’s football players have yet another reason to feel good about 2010. On Sunday night, Joachim Löw’s selection received the prestigious honor as “Team of the Year”. The German coach and his captain Philipp Lahm accepted the price at a televised event in Baden-Baden. The team’s inspiring run during the South African World Cup convinced the jury of 1500 sports journalists, who had to cast their vote. The men’s team succeeded the German women, which had won the award the previous year.

“Upon returning from South Africa, we became aware that we had triggered an emotional surge here in Germany”, said Löw. “This summer was a huge success, which had so much to do with the performance and the appearance of our team.”

The German team finished third at the World Cup, but first at the ballot in Baden-Baden. The DFB-selection amassed 3.436 points, while the German rowing team (1738) and the Hockey team (1457) finished in second and third place. Formula-1-Champion Sebastian Vettel received the honor as “Male Athlete of the Year”, two-time Olympic Skiing Champion Maria Riesch as the “Female Athlete of the Year”.

German team had to overcome adversity

Löw’s team had to overcome much adversity when preparing for the World Cup, losing starting goalkeeper René Adler, then Simon Rolfes and Heiko Westermann and, in a seemingly devastating loss, their captain Michael Ballack, all due to severe injuries.

However, their replacements made the most out of it, while the team grew stronger facing such long odds. Philipp Lahm took over as Germany’s new captain, Schalke’s Manuel Neuer guarded the German goal, while Sami Khedira manned Ballack’s midfield position – all to perfection. Real Madrid signed both Khedira and his teammate Mesut Özil following their performances at the World Cup. Bayern’s Thomas Müller led all scorers. A great tournament, a great year 2010, which now came to a conclusion with the award in Baden-Baden.
