Stuttgart releases championship coach Armin Veh

On Sunday, VfB Stuttgart released coach Armin Veh following a 4-1 defeat to VfL Wolfsburg. The German champions of 2007 have now lost five games in a row, giving them a disappointing 11th rank in the Bundesliga standings.

“Following a meeting with Armin Veh, we came to the conclusion that there was a need for a change”, said Stuttgart’s President Erwin Staudt. “We then terminated the working relation with Armin Veh and Alfons Higl. We feel grateful for what was accomplished over the last three years, which made our decision even more difficult.”

Former German national player Markus Babbel conducted the practice session on Sunday morning. The 47-year old Veh succeeded Giovanni Trapattoni as the VfB-coach in February 2006. He led the team to the German championship in 2007. Veh is the second coach released this season (Jos Luhukay, Borussia Mönchengladbach). Since the inception of the Bundesliga, 311 coaches have been fired.
