Stuttering start for Can’s Liverpool but Gomez celebrates Besiktas victory

Germany international Emre Can couldn't get a win with his team on the opening matchday of the Europa League, as Liverpool only managed a 1-1 draw away to Bordeaux. Mario Gomez, however, came off the bench and featured in an uneventful 1-0 Besiktas win over Albanian side Skenderbeu Korce.

Can, who got his first win in his debut for the national side less than two weeks ago against Poland, played the whole match. After the interval, Lallana made it 1-0 but Jussie equalised late on to earn his team a point. Gomez, who scored a brace in the Turkish league at the weekend, was substituted on in the 61st minute. Former Hoffenheim player Andreas Beck came on to the field in the closing stages and the winning goal for Besiktas was scored by José Sosa, who is under contract at Bayern.

The other game in their group finished a Molde 3-1 victory against Fenerbahce. Mohamed Elyounoussi, cousin of Hoffenheim player Tarik Elyounoussi, scored the decisive goal.

Lazio fail to win without Klose

Former Bayer Leverkusen player Heung-Min Son, who has just made the switch from the Bundesliga to Tottenham, scored his first goals for the club. Son’s brace earned Spurs a win against Qarabag of Azerbaijan in a 3-1 victory. Klose’s Lazio could only get a 1-1 draw away to Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk, as the former Germany international missed the game through injury.
