Özil's goal secures Bremen's sixth cup victory

Werder Bremen has won the DFB Cup for the sixth time thanks to a goal by Under 21 international Mesut Özil. Özil decided the 66th German Cup final against Bayer Leverkusen in Berlin's Olympic Stadium with his goal after 58 minutes to give Werder a deserved 1-0 (0-0) victory. By winning the cup, Bremen secured their place in next year's UEFA Europa League.

In front of 74.244 fans in the sold out stadium Bremen had the most of the game from the beginning, while Leverkusen had difficulties to break through the strong Werder defense. Had Patrick Helmes scored from short distance after 22 minutes, the final may have taken another direction.

Brazilian midfielder Diego, who played his final game for Werder and has signed a contract with Juventus Turin, registered an assist on Özil's goal in the 58th minute. Werder coach Thomas Schaaf said following the game: "It was just a matter of determination and finishing strong. We really wanted this one. It was a great game."

Following the game from Dubai, German coach Joachim Löw said: "It was an exciting game, fast-paced, an intense battle. Bremen is a worthy Cup winner, they had the edge in the game."

More than 20.000 fans celebrated the team on Bremen's market square on Sunday.
