Özil and Arsenal suffer shock defeat

Reigning champions FC Barcelona and Marc-André ter Stegen drew 1-1 with Antonio Rüdiger’s AS Roma, as Lionel Messi made his 100th Champions League appearance. Meanwhile, Mesut Özil suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to Dinamo Zagreb with Arsenal FC, whilst Shkodran Mustafi and FC Valencia went down 3-2 at home to Zenit St. Petersburg. After defeats for the two Manchester clubs, Chelsea FC were the only English side to win on matchday one, beating Maccabi Tel Aviv 4-0 at home.

In Leverkusen’s Group E, ter Stegen had a rough time for Roma’s equaliser. In the 31st minute, Roma’s Alessandro Florenzi fired from just inside the Barcelona half, lobbing the ex- Gladbach keeper who stood a fair way out from his goal. Luis Suarez had put Barca in front against the Italian side, as Rüdiger celebrated his Champions League debut in the starting XI.

Arsenal lose game and Giroud

Bayern München’s group opponents Arsenal, with Özil in the starting XI and Per Mertesacker still not available for selection, had a night to forget in Zagreb. After an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain own goal midway through the first half, Olivier Giroud was sent off for a second bookable offence, leaving Arsenal with a mountain to climb, before former ex-Leverkusen attacker Junior Fernandes made it 2-0 in the second half. Theo Walcott scored a consolation goal late in the game, but it wasn’t enough to rescue a point.

With Mustafi in the starting XI, Valencia found themselves 2-0 down after two Hulk goals in the opening 15 minutes. The Spanish side pulled two back in the second half through Joao Cancelo and Andre Gomes, before Axel Witsel fired in the winner to make it 3-2. In Group H’s other game, AA Gent and Olympique Lyon shared a 1-1 draw.

Eden Hazard missed a penalty for Chelsea in Group G, before Willian, Oscar, Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas sealed a convincing win for the London side. In the other match, FC Porto threw away an early lead to draw 2-2 with Dynamo Kiev.
