Matthäus appointed as honorary captain of national team

Lothar Matthäus received the appointment as the honory captain of the German National team on friday evening at the meeting of the DFB in Magdeburg. He is the fourth German football player ever to receive this honour after Fritz Walter, Uwe Seeler and Franz Beckenbauer.

Matthäus played 150 times for the German National team and made his last game at the european championchip in Rotterdam on June 20th 2000 against Portugal.

In his successfull career the team captain Matthäus lead Germany to the gain of the world champion in Italy 1990. Matthäus, who made his debut in 1980 against the Netherlands, was also part of the German National team in 1980, when they won the European Championship in Italy.

Matthäus started his career at the FC Herzogenaurach and played for Borussia Mönchengladbach from 1979 to 1984 before he came to Bayern München. After a four year appearance for Inter Mailand from 1988 to 1992 he returned to Bayern München. He finished his career at the New York MetroStars in 2000.

Matthäus was voted for the "world best player " in 1990 and 1991. [mh]
