Just-promoted Holstein Kiel are looking to make waves in the second division, but now they want to cause a sensation in the DFB-Pokal, too. Their opponents in the second round of the cup are FSV Mainz 05. The match takes place on Tuesday October 24th.
“In Holstein Kiel, we have drawn an ambitious team, with whom we have some unfinished business in the cup,” said Sporting Director, Rouven Schröder.
These two have history
The teams have only played once in their history. In December 2011, FSV hosted regional side Holstein Kiel in the DFB-Pokal quarter-finals. It didn’t start well for Mainz – they were behind after six minutes when striker Anthony Ujah headed into his own net. Kiel’s defender Steve Müller then sealed the victory after 64 minutes. Six years later, Mainz have the chance to have their revenge.
Mainz cruised through the first round of the cup, defeating regional side Lüneburger SK Hansa 3-1, while Holstein overcame Eintracht Braunschweig 2-1 at home.
There will be a reunion next Tuesday for Robin Zentner. The goalkeeper played for the Bundesliga side between 2015 and summer 2017, but now stands between the Holstein sticks.
