Mainz match-winner Yunus Malli scores twice against Paderborn

Schalke 04 and Borussia Mönchengladbach reaffirmed their Champions League aspirations on Saturday afternoon. Schalke celebrated a 1-0 victory over Hannover 96 at home. Gladbach travelled to Stuttgart, where they also won 1-0. Both clubs have 30 points now, but the better goal difference sees Borussia in third place.

SC Freiburg were trailing 1-0 at half-time against Eintracht Frankfurt, but turned the game around to win 4-1. It was their first success in six matches, which enabled them to climb the table from 18th to 13th place. The Germany Under-21 international Yunus Malli helped Mainz 05 clinch a 5-0 victory over Paderborn. FC Köln secured a perfect start to the second half of the season by beating Hamburg 2-0 away from home.

Höger secures three points for Schalke

Marco Höger was the match-winner in Gelsenkirchen’s Veltins-Arena. 32 minutes into the match he netted a great effort from the edge of the area. Schalke ended the match with ten men, after Klaas-Jan Hunterlaar saw a red card in the 86th minute.

Patrick Hermann scored his fourth goal of the season to put Mönchengladbach ahead after 71 minutes. Stuttgart had a great opportunity to equalise in injury time, but Georg Niedermeier’s effort was deflected by the bar. The VfB have dropped to 17th position in the table.

Malli scores twice in Mainz win

SC Freiburg were caught on the wrong foot early on. Only a minuted had been played, when Marco Russ put the guests from Frankfurt ahead. However, Freiburg emerged from the dressing room a much more confident team. It took them only three minutes to turn the game. Vladimir Darida put a 61st-minute penalty home to equalise. Moments later, new loan-signing Nils Petersen put a perfect finish to a counter-attack. He went on to add two more goals to the tally, making the final result 4-1.

Malli scored twice to put Mainz ahead. The midfielder drove home his first effort from 18 yards to open the scoring six minutes into the game. Just after the break, he doubled the lead from an extremely sharp angle. He also delivered the assist for Pablo di Blasis’ goal after 68 minutes. Sami Allagui added his name to scoresheet in the 83rd minute. He was also involved in the 5-0, when he was fouled within the area. Johannes Geis stepped up to take the penalty.

Risse nets twice on the road

Inspite of fielding their new signing Ivica Olic, Hamburg failed to score against a solid Köln defence. Instead, Marcel Risse slotted in two second-half goals to secure three points on the road. Hamburg are now 15th, level in points with 17th-placed VfB Stuttgart.
