Löw: "Still a lot of work to do"

Germany defeated Switzerland 4-0 (1-0) in the final game before the announcement of the EURO roster. DFB coach Joachim Löw discusses his team’s performance in this interview.

Question: Joachim Löw, how do you rate the 4-0 win over Switzerland?

Joachim Löw: Well, we were all pretty disappointed following the game against Austria. My team has shown a much improved effort in yesterday’s game against Switzerland. I liked our allignments and our efficency in front of the suisse goal, even though the pitch was difficult to play on. I saw a remarkable improvement compared to February.

Question: Your forwards scored all four goals, with Mario Gomez hitting the mark twice.

Löw: Really, what does a coach care about who scores? Then again, this success is great for their self-confidence. Mario showed no nerves in front of the goal, he is really cold-blooded when given the opportunity. I’m happy for Lukas Podolski as well. Whenever he chases the ball, whenever he is constantly on the move, he is really an outstanding and very dangerous offensive player.

Question: Following an off-day against Austria, your goalkeeper Jens Lehmann played error-free against Switzerland. How do you rate his performance?

Löw: I liked his charisma, the way he directed his team. He was in control throughout the game, which was not always the case against Austria.

Question: With two months to go until the EURO 2008 in Austria and Switzerland, at what level do you see the German team?

Löw: We have found answers to all our questions. Then again, we must continue to grow, we must never stop maturing. Please take into account that we had only two days of preparation prior to the game in Basel. During our pre-tournament camp in Mallorca, we will have a lot of work to do.
