Leverkusen leap into the Champions League

Bayer 04 Leverkusen will be competing in Europe’s premier club competition next year. The Werkself beat fellow contenders Hertha BSC 2-1 in Saturday’s evening game to guarantee the final automatic qualification spot.

Germany U21 international Julian Brandt (2’) and Lars Bender (16’) scored for Leverkusen, who have now won seven on the spin, thus equalling a club record previously set in both 2001 and 2015. Vedad Ibisevic (21’) got one back for the Berlin side but it was nothing more than a consolation strike.

Roger Schmidt’s men have guaranteed themselves a third-place finish, meaning that they have reached the Champions League for the fourth consecutive season. Hertha could still reach the competition too, however, a run of one point from five games has seen them drift out of the top four for the first time in 2016. They have, however, already got at least a spot in the Europa League.
