World Cup-winner Philipp Lahm has been voted as ‘German Footballer of the Year 2017’ around two months after ending his spectacular career with champions Bayern München. The 33-year-old former Germany captain received the most votes in the poll, organised by sport magazine Kicker, which was voted on by German sport journalists. The result means that he succeeds his fellow World Cup-winner and former colleague at FC Bayern: Jerome Boateng.
In addition, Olympic winner and Germany captain Dzenifer Marozsan, who won the treble with Olympique Lyon this year, was voted as ‘Germany’s Women’s Footballer of the Year 2017’. The sport journalists selected 1899 Hoffenheim manager Julian Nagelsmann as the ‘Manager of the Year 2017’.
Kroos comes second
Lahm amassed 242 votes for the Men’s award. München’s long-time captain finished above of Germany international Toni Kroos, who plays for Spanish Champions League and Liga BBVA winners Real Madrid (192 votes). Third-place was Bundesliga top-scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of DFB-Pokal winners BVB (120 votes).
Marozsan (216) finished ahead of last year’s winner Alexandra Popp (VfL Wolfsburg/113 votes) and Mandy Islacker (1. FFC Frankfurt/107). Nagelsmann was crowned as the successor to Dirk Schuster (formerly of Darmstadt 98) thanks to his 273 votes – defeating his Bundesliga colleague Christian Streich of SC Freiburg by a mere 12 votes. Ralph Hasenhüttl came in third place for his achievement in getting Bundesliga newcomers RB Leipzig to finish second.
Lahm’s success comes as a second successive victory for a defender in the ‘Footballer of the Year’ category. The Germany international, who has played 113 times for his country, sees the award as a commemoration for his incredibly successful career on the whole. Marozsan’s victory is the first win for a female German player whilst playing abroad.
