KSC vs. Bayer in Pokal for first time

It will be the premiere of this year’s competition when third-tier outfit Karlsruher SC take on Bayer Leverkusen in round 1 of the DFB Pokal. The two traditional clubs have faced each other in the Bundesliga on 34 occasions, most recently in 2009. However they have never been drawn against each other in the Pokal.

The Werkself do not have the best memories when it comes to this fixture. They have failed to win at the last three attempts against the Rheinländer, with their last success against Karlsruher dating all the way back to 1995. Four away games then followed, all of which ended in draws.

Bayer will not be treated to an easy start to the new season when they take on the recently relegated club, especially since KSC will have already played four league games by this point. “We have a tough start but we are not anxious about it in any way,” said Jonas Boldt, sporting director for Leverkusen. “We will know afterwards exactly where we stand.” [sid/js]
