Kroos named in FIFA World XI of the year

Toni Kroos was named in the FIFA World Eleven of the year for the third time yesterday evening. The team was picked by a group of over 24,000 players across the world.

“It’s a nice award,” said Kroos, who reached the semi-final of the European Championship with Germany in 2016 and won the Champions League and league title with Real Madrid. “I’m normally against individual awards, but this is one picked by your colleagues who appreciate your performances.”

Alongside the 27 year-old were Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric, Sergio Ramos and Marcelo from Real Madrid, as well as Gianluigi Buffon, Dani Alves and Leonardo Bonucci (at AC Milan since the beginning of the season), Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta of FC Barcelona and finally, Neymar who moved from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain over the summer.

Ronaldo World Player of the Year

Cristiano Ronaldo picked up the award for Footballer of the Year for the fifth time after also winning it in 2008, 2013, 2014 and 2016, pipping Messi and Neymar. “I’m very proud. It’s a big moment for me,” said Ronaldo. “It’s just great to be here with so many incredible players. I’m very happy.” The title for the best female footballer went to European Championship winner Lieke Martens from Holland. Dzsenifer Marozsan came fourth with 11,5% of the vote.
