Just three games until Berlin – Hamburg and Köln aiming for next round

Hamburger SV vs. 1. FC Köln is an evergreen fixture in the DFB Cup and the two teams meet again this Tuesday in the last 16. Hamburg have won the tournament three times, while 1. FC Köln have had their hands on the trophy just once. However you have to turn pretty far back in the winners list to find either club’s name. Hamburg’s last triumph in the competition was in 1987 whilst Köln lifted the trophy back in 1983.

It is also quite some time since either side contested a final. Köln were runners up in 1991 after losing on penalties to Werder Bremen, whilst HSV have not reached Berlin since their victory in 1987.

Hamburg one of Modeste’s favourite opponents

While Hamburg must divert much of their energy to the relegation battle in the Bundesliga, Köln have their mind set on other things. Currently in seventh place in the Bundesliga, they have never had a season as strong as this one and are dreaming of reaching the European places for the first time in 24 years. Köln have benefited from the goals of Anthony Modeste more than anything else. The man with the goals has hit the back of the net seven times in five matches against HSV. Most recently in his side’s 3-0 win when he bagged his first hat-trick.

But Hamburg are also heading into this tie with optimism. “A mid-week home game; what more could you want in the cup? You have every chance of getting through to the next round in this kind of game,” said HSV head coach Markus Gisdol. Hamburg also won the last of the six fixtures between the two teams in the cup, running out as narrow winners in the 2013/14 season thanks to a late goal from Ivo Ilicevic to give his side a 2-1 victory. It should be a thrilling fight to reach the quarter-finals on Tuesday.
