Jones: “Our young players should use this as a chance to grow”

This Friday sees Germany take on France in the last international fixture of 2017 (17:55 CET). Head coach Steffi Jones and team captain Dzsenifer Marozsan have been speaking to DFB.de ahead of the game in Bielefeld.

Steffi Jones on ...

... the requirements for the game: Basically we will concentrate only on our game. It’s all about the test against France, that’s the only thing we’re focusing on. We’re concentrated on preparing to face a strong opposition, and we’re looking forward it.

... the aim: We want to apply the things which we’ve talked about and practiced on the pitch. It will depend a lot on our willingness to run, our body language and how we implement what we’ve practiced.

... the injury woes: We’ve had these problems all year, but we will concentrate on the squad that we have available. We have a clear rule not to take any injured players and if they are, we send them home. The players’ health comes first. We have a big squad and the motivation is high because we’ve worked really hard. The training was really good, very focused, tense, and with high concentration. We want to improve on the key points we identified in the Iceland game and do better against France. We will see completely different body language.

... the young players: The players we pick against France have our complete confidence. We have a common thread; the young players will integrate quickly. It’s clear that they’re able to grow and mature here. It’s an ongoing evolution; we’re still in the development process. It’s a great process, because you always discover players who will become leaders. Now we just have to bring it to the pitch.

... the potential for improvement: We need to be better across the defence, to contest the duels better and in general improve our defensive performance. To call upon our German principles. Then we can let our creativity run free.

... the opposition: France are a team that play incredibly good football, and like to keep possession. We’ve sought out this kind of strong opposition, because we want to measure ourselves against them. France have a lot of quality in the squad, which we’re looking forward to facing. Our young players should also look forward to it and use it as a chance to grow.

Dzsenifer Marozsan on...

... her return after her cheekbone fracture: I’m happy to be here again, and feel very good in general. We’ve trained really well; the mood in the team is phenomenal. For me, that’s very important. We know exactly what we have to do against France. It’s a great test for us; we’re looking forward to it.

... the opposition: I know the players very well, Steffi knows how strong the French are. I don’t need to say too much more. We can’t let France play their game. We want to show dominance from the first minute and control the game.

... her absence from the Iceland game: Of course it’s always painful not to be with the team or be able to help. But now I’m back and I can tell that we’ve put that game behind us and are on the right track to go out together as a team again. Already in the first training session, we got straight to the point and every player showed what we want to see and to implement.

... the common goal: Together, we all want get on the right path to success. It’s always our expectation to win. It’s about getting ourselves on the right track and coming through this phase re-discover our consistency.
