Grindel wants to “bring people together” with the 2024 European Championship

DFB president Reinhard Grindel hopes that a successful German bid for the 2024 European Championship will result in a tournament that sets an example for inclusivity and against discrimination. “We want to organise a football celebration that can bring together hundreds and thousands of fans from all over the world,” said Grindel at the Sports Business Festival (SPOBIS) in Düsseldorf on Tuesday.

He labeled the European Championship finals as a “flagship event”, which the German Football association (DFB) are preparing a fair application for: “We want to show that you can be successful when you do things by the rulebook - based on good values and decency.”

European Championship ambassador Lahm: “The home 2006 World Cup was unparalleled”

Aside from Germany, Turkey are also bidding for the rights to host the tournament in 2024. Both associations must submit their bids by the end of April this year, before UEFA make their official decision in September. “The decision makers at UEFA must ask themselves: What are things like in that country? Which values are lived by there? How will the experience be for the fans?”, emphasised Grindel.

If the tournament were to be held in Germany, the games would be played out in Berlin, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg, Cologne, Leipzig, Munich and Stuttgart. European Championship ambassador and 2014 World Cup winning captain Philipp Lahm looked back on the success of the home World Cup in 2006. “The 2006 World Cup was my first World Cup and it was a once in a lifetime experience. I will never forget it. I will carry those memories with me for the rest of my life. Of all the things that I’ve experienced since then, the 2006 tournament was the highlight. The way that our fans got behind us was sensational.”
