Grindel advocates Video Assistance at World Cup

Reinhard Grindel has spoken in favour of the introduction of video assistant referees at the World Cup in Russia (14th June – 15th July). “Considering the situation the Bundesliga, it would be strange if I opposed video assistance at the World Cup, because it makes football fairer,” the president of the German Football Association (DFB) told the Rheinischen Post newspaper. “Therefore, I am also categorically in favour of the use of video assistance in Russia.”

However, Grindel also cautions against communication problems with referees: “I think it’s imperative that referees can communicate effectively with one another. For example, it won’t do any good to have a referee from one country and a video assistant from a completely different country, who don’t understand each other.”

Grindel is satisfied with the development of video assistance in the Bundesliga: “The number of controversial decisions has definitely decreased recently. The number of decisions which have made the football fairer has increased. In this respect, I think video assistance is headed on the right path.”
