Gladbach beat Köln in the derby

Borussia Mönchengladbach have come away from their opening game of the season, the Rhine derby, with a victory. They won the game 1-0, courtesy of Nico Elvedi’s first Bundesliga goal.

Gladbach began to dominate the game from the get-go. After only 18 minutes, Borussia had already had seven shots on goal, whilst Köln had none. As the first half progressed, Hecking’s team continued to look like the better side, whilst Cordoba was Köln’s only player looking dangerous.

Elvedi finishes off a Gladbach counter

Immediately after the break, Gladbach took a deserved lead. Stindl released Traoré down the left, who then played it into Elvedi to finish from five metres out. Köln reacted well, and it was only Elvedi’s strong challenge that prevented Cordoba from equalising. The game then became a very open affair, and Borussia arguably should have doubled their lead. However, after Raúl Bobadilla missed a big chance in stoppage time, the match ended 1-0.
