Germany win first major test against Denmark

Reigning World Champions Germany won the first mayor test on the way to the World Cup in China. In a friendly at Magdeburg the Germans beat Denmark 4-0 (2-0). In their new World Cup jerseys the German side did not face any serious problems confronting the Danish, ranked sixth in the world. An own goal by keeper Heidi Johansen (13th) put Silvia Neid's team in front, before team captain Birgit Prince (20th) ensured a 2-0 lead to go to the break.

After the break the Germans did not take it any easier and had another two goals by Fatmire Bajramaj (73th) and Conny Pohlers (89th).

Currently, Neid has assembled 26 players for the World Cup in China (September 10-30). She needs to reduce the roster to 21 players prior to the tournament. Neid would like to cut the five players until the middle of August, so that she can field her World Cup team for the games against Switzerland (August 22, Koblenz) and Norway (August 30, Mainz). The German delegation will fly to Shanghai on September 3. "Cutting these five players will be a tough decision", says Neid. "Nobody has disappointed so far, every mini-camp has been very rewarding. I guess they all want to come with us to the World Cup, so every girl is working very hard."

The agenda has been extensive and ambitious. Neid has staged three mini-camps so far, in Cologne, Kaiserau and Bitburg. Each preparational unit has been devoted to a particular point of emphasis - conditioning, game systems and tactical behavior. On some days, Neid had the team on the practice field for five hours. "We really made good use of our time", says Neid.
