German Under 20 women clinch final

The dream continues. The German Under 20 women beat South Korea 5-1 (2-0), qualifying for the U 20 World Cup final this Sunday in Bielefeld. The German team led by coach Maren Meinert will face either Columbia or Nigeria.

Svenja Huth (13.), Kim Kulig (26., 53.) and Alexandra Popp (50., 67.) scored for the winning side in front of a crowd of 18,000 in Bochum, including DFB President Dr. Theo Zwanziger. The German Under 20 women had reached the World Cup final just once before, 2004 in Thailand.

Germany’s women grabbed the initiative from the get-go, leaving golden opportunities on the wayside early on. A perfect cross by Tabea Kemme then led to Svenja Huth scoring from short range (13.). A shot by Kim Kulig from just outside the penalty box gave the DFB-team a comfortable lead. Alexandra Popp scored her 8th goal of the tournament to make it 3-0, before Kulig then struck again. Ji So Yun (64.) netted the only goal for the Koreans. Popp then converted a penalty – her 9th goal at the World Cup.
