German football mourns death of Werner Hackmann

Werner Hackmann, president of the German football league (DFL), died on Sunday, DFB spokesman Harald Stenger announced on Sunday.

Stenger said the former Hamburg politician and president of Hamburger SV had died at home on Sunday in the north German city after a long fight against cancer. He had attended the UEFA Congress in Duesseldorf which elected Michel Platini as president on Friday. Hackmann, who leaves a wife and two children, had been treated for cancer since 1999.
