French midfielder Franck Ribery booked Bayern München's place in the last four of the German Cup with a dramatic penalty in the 120nd minute of their quarter-final win over neighbours 1860 Munich.
Ice-cool Ribery kept his composure to score the game's only
goal when he converted his spot kick for the second time after his
first successful effort - just seconds before - was ordered to be
retaken after a team-mate strayed off-side.
Earlier in the evening, VfL Wolfsburg also booked their place in the
last four with a 2-1 extra-time win over Hamburger SV thanks to their
Brazilians Grafite and Marcelinho.
After Grafite put his side in the lead with a 17th minute
penalty, Hamburg hit back when captain Rafael van der Vaart
unleashed a superb free-kick in the 70th minute. It was all-square at full-time, but Marcelinho hit the winner in extra time to put his side in the semi-finals.
VfB Stuttgart were knocked out of the German Cup by second division FC Carl Zeiss Jena on Tuesday, losing their quarter-final on penalties 4-5 after extra time ended at 2-2. In Tuesday's other quarter-final, Borussia Dortmund eased past second division 1899 Hoffenheim 3-1.
Stuttgart looked to be heading for victory at 2-1 up in the second period of extra time but Robert Müller took advantage of a mistake by goalkeeper Sven Ulreich and stroked the ball into the empty net. Antonio da Silva missed the decisive penalty, firing Stuttgart's fourth over the bar, and Torsten Ziegner then stepped up to make it 5-4.
Striker Tobias Werner had given Jena a surprise lead in the 32nd minute. The Bundesliga champions had to wait until the 81st minute before Mario Gomez levelled. The tall striker then netted again with a header in the fourth
minute of extra time.
In Dortmund, Giovanni Federico put the home side ahead after 20 minutes. Tinga Dortmund's lead three minutes later. Hoffenheim's Francisco Copado scored from the penalty spot just before halftime to make it 2-1, before Mladen Petric made the match safe for Dortmund in the 54th minute.
The semifinals are scheduled for March 18./19., while the Cup Finals in Berlin’s Olympiastadion will be played on April 19 - the early date due to the UEFA EURO 2008 in Austria and Switzerland.
