Former national coach Jupp Derwall celebrated 80th birthday

Jupp Derwall has led Germany to the European Championship triumph in 1980 and a second place finish at the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain. On Saturday, the former coach of the “Mannschaft” celebrated his 80th birthday. Derwall served as the national team’s coach between 1978 and 1984.

Following the 1978 FIFA World Cup, Derwall succeded Helmut Schön as the coach of the national team. Beginning in 1970, Derwall had assisted Schön on the staff. Winning the 1980 European Championships in Italy and finishing as runner-up at the 1982 FIFA World Cup, were Derwall’s major successes as coach of the "Mannschaft". He still holds the record for the string of 23 games without a single defeat. During his overall reign of 67 games, Germany registered 45 wins, eleven ties and eleven losses.

Two titles in Turkey

During his playing days, Derwall wore the jerseys of Rhenania Würselen, Alemannia Aachen, and Fortuna Düsseldorf. In Switzerland, he played for FC Biel and FC Schaffhausen. In 1953, he was a member of Alemannia Aachen’s team that reached the German Cup Final. Derwall totalled two international games for Germany.

Between 1962 and 1969, Derwall worked as a coach for the Saarland federation. He coached Germany’s Olmpic all-stars in 1972. Following his days as Germany’s most prominent coach, Derwall moved to Turkey, where he won one cup final and two national titles as coach of Galatasaray Istanbul. In deep appreciation of his work, the University of Istanbul awarded Derwall the degree of an honorary doctor. [th]
