FIFA appoints Horst R. Schmidt adviser for 2010 FIFA World Cup

Horst R. Schmidt, the General Secretary of the German Football Association (DFB) and one of the key figures behind the success of the 2006 FIFA World Cup in his capacity as Senior Vice-President of the OC 2006 FIFA World Cup, is going to support the world football governing body's efforts to organise the 2010 edition of the tournament in South Africa. In accordance with a recently signed agreement, Schmidt has been appointed official adviser of FIFA.

"Horst R. Schmidt is a true expert, and having him on board will add tremendous quality to the team," said FIFA General Secretary Urs Linsi, who is in charge of the overall organisation of South Africa 2010. "World-wide, I do not believe there is anybody else with more know-how and experience in the areas of organisation, security, and ticketing. In fact, our thanks go out to the DFB for putting Horst R. Schmidt at FIFA's disposal for this new assignment."

"I greatly look forward to my new task, as well as to co-operating with my colleagues at the South-African LOC and the FIFA office in Johannesburg. My prime objective as a team worker is to make a meaningful contribution to the success of the 2010 FIFA World Cup," said Schmidt on Friday. Time-wise, he will dedicate roughly one week per month to the South Africa project, while at the same time retaining his position as DFB General Secretary until the end of his term in November 2007, as well as that of Senior Vice-President of the LOC Germany 2006.

Schmidt's decision to accept FIFA's proposal was preceded by close consultation with the DFB President, Dr. Theo Zwanziger, who commented: "Following the fantastic event that was Germany 2006, it goes without saying that the DFB will support FIFA and the South-African LOC in organising the next tournament in four years' time. With his great experience and expertise, Horst R. Schmidt is the right man in the right place."
