Draxler scores but VfL winless run continues

VfL Wolfsburg continue to struggle in the Bundesliga. Julian Draxler put them in front against Köln on matchday 19 but Anthony Modeste equalised moments later, meaning Dieter Hecking’s men haven’t won any of their last six league games. The result also means that the gap between them and the Champions League spots hasn’t narrowed this weekend.

Balanced game

Wolfsburg started strongly, with Max Kruse, Vieirinha and André Schürrle all having chances to give their side the lead in the first half, however, some expert keeping from Köln’s Timo Horn coupled with some wasteful finishing ensured that the game was goalless at the interval. The visitors’ best chance in the opening period fell to Germany international Jonas Hector, but his shot lacked power (36’).

The game remained balanced after the break, with both chances passing up opportunities to take the lead. Simon Zoller (52’) and Modeste (52’ and 62’) could have scored early in the second half, as could Luiz Gustavo, who hit the post after 56 minutes. Draxler then put his side in front with just 23 minutes left on the clock but the Wolves were unable to hold on, with the visitors grabbing a deserved point courtesy of former TSG striker Modeste (75’).
