Draxler stars as PSG advance to round of 16

National team player Julian Draxler played a big part in Paris Saint-Germain’s qualification for the Coupe de France round of 16 last night. The former Wolfsburg player scored a brace in a 4-0 away win against Rennes, after also netting in his first league match for the capital team against the same opponents.

The German's goal to make it 1-0 was quite special. He got onto a long ball from the defence and took it under control, he then lobbed opposition ‘keeper Benoît Costil from around 15 yards out. The ball initially hit the left post, but nevertheless went in. For his second goal in the 69th minute, the attacker used his pace and dribbling skills after receiving a pass from midfield. He made it to the edge of the box and hit the ball low into the right corner of the net, again the goalkeeper was helpless. His team’s other goals came from Brazilian Lucas (38’) and Hatem Ben Arfa (90’).

Rüdiger and Roma leave it late

Draxler’s Germany teammate Antonio Rüdiger was also in domestic cup action, as AS Roma faced AC Cesena in the Coppa Italia. The defender started on the right of a back-three, as Luciano Spalletti’s men needed a last minute winner from captain Francesco Totti (2-1) to beat their opposition from Serie B and set up a semifinal clash with city rivals Lazio.

Former Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko put Roma into the lead in the 68th minute but the hosts were pegged back five minutes later as Luca Garritano levelled for the minnows. It seemed the game was heading for extra time, but Kevin Strootman was brought down in the box in the fifth minute of stoppage time and club legend Francesco Totti converted from the spot.
