Dortmund drop to bottom - Wolfsburg strengthen their grip on second

Borussia Dortmund have dropped to the bottom of the Bundesliga table. A 2-0 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Commezbank Arena ensured that Jürgen Klopp’s side occupy last place in the table with only four games left before the winter break. Thomas Schaaf’s side impressed throughout the game and fully deserved the victory. The home side started strongly and took the lead after five minutes through Alexander Meier who confidently fired past Roman Weidenfeller for his eighth goal of the season.

Later in the first half Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang drew a great save from Wiedwald; Großkreutz hit the post from the rebound. Dortmund improved after the break and actually had more chances than their hosts but were architects of their own downfall once again. A breakdown in communication between Weidenfeller and Matthias Ginter saw the central defender head the ball past his goalkeeper and into the path of Haris Seferovic who gleefully tapped into an empty net to send the home supporters into ecstasy and the visitors to the bottom of the pile.

Early goal seals victory for the Wolves

VfL Wolfsburg strengthened their grip on second place in the Bundesliga table with victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach on matchday 13 of the Bundesliga season. Both sides were in Europa League action on Thursday night but there was no sign of tiredness in an enthralling game in the Volkswagen Arena. The visitors made a stronger start but fell behind in the 12th minute when Robin Knoche converted after Yann Sommer failed to clear.

Patrick Herrmann could have equalised in the 30th minute but Diego Benaglio magnificently kept out his header. The first part of the second period belonged to the hosts. Ivica Olic and Ivan Perisic came close to doubling their lead; Kevin De Bruyne had a goal ruled out for offside. Despite a late onslaught from Borussia, in which Branimir Hrgota, Christoph Kramer and Tony Jantschke all had chances to equalise, the Wolves deserved their victory and they are now three points clear of third placed Bayer 04 Leverkusen.
