Dortmund down Hannover to open four-point gap

Poland striker Robert Lewandowski netted twice for Borussia Dortmund in their 3-1 win over Hannover 96 on Sunday to put them four points clear of Bayern München who beat Schalke 2-0.

Lewandowski has now scored 16 goals this season and is closing in on the league's joint top-scorers Bayern's Mario Gomez and Schalke's Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, who have 18 each. At a sold-out Signal Iduna Park stadium in front of 80,500 fans, this was Dortmund's seventh straight victory -- and their sixth in the Bundesliga -- to leave them on 52 points, four clear of second-placed Bayern.

Earlier France winger Franck Ribery scored Bayern's goals as they bounced back from their shock defeat at Basel with victory over Schalke.

On Saturday Bayer Leverkusen won the Rhine derby at 1. FC Köln 2-0 (1-0) in Saturday's matches of Round 23 of the Bundesliga and defended fifth place thanks to a double by German international Lars Bender (16, 50). Meanwhile Otto Rehhagel lost his debut as coach of Hertha BSC Berlin 0-3 (0-0) at relegation opponent and co-promoted FC Augsburg, who switch places with Berlin and drop them to 16th place.

Second placed Borussia Mönchengladbach have lost two points in their race for the German Championship in Friday's opening match of Round 23 of the Bundesliga. Against Hamburger SV the team of coach Lucien Favre drew 1-1 (1-0) at home.
