Second Bundesliga sides Energie Cottbus, MSV Duisburg and Alemannia Aachen caused major setups in Round three of the German Cup on Wednesday, when they beat Bundesliga rivals to move to the quarterfinals. Cottbus triumphantly won 3-1 (3-0) at VfL Wolfsburg, Duisburg beat 1. FC Köln 2-1 (1-0) and Aachen won 6-4 (1-1, 0-0, 0-0) after penalties against Eintracht Frankfurt.
Title holders Bayern München advanced after a spectacular 6-3 (2-2) at VfB Stuttgart, four days after a 5-3 at the same stadium in the Bundesliga.
On Tuesday 1899 Hoffenheim and FC Schalke 04 had booked their quarterfinal places earlier. 1899 beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 2-0 (1-0). Gylfi Sigurdsson (35.) and Demba Ba (63.) scored for Hoffenheim.
Schalke won against second division leaders FC Augsburg 1-0 (0-0). The matches between Kickers Offenbach - 1. FC Nürnberg and TuS Koblenz - 1. FC Kaiserslautern were cancelled.
