Bayern win thanks to Lewandowski brace

Bayern München’s good run of form in the Bundesliga continued this weekend, despite the fact that they are suffering with injury problems. Pep Guardiola’s men beat 1899 Hoffenheim 2-0 in the Allianz Arena on Sunday courtesy of Robert Lewandowski’s brace.

The Poland international gave his side the lead after 32 minutes and doubled it midway through the second half (64’). He missed a number of chance to wrap up a treble throughout the game and Arturo Vidal smacked the post shortly after being brought off the bench.

Injuries meant that Bayern’s back three consisted of Joshua Kimmich, Holger Badstuber and David Alaba, with captain Philipp Lahm shielding them. Huub Stevens sprung a surprise by not naming Germany international Kevin Volland in his starting line-up. His replacement, Andrej Kramaric, had Hoffenheim’s first effort of the game but his 41st minute effort lacked conviction.

Bayern crank up the pressure

FC Bayern kept pressing in front of a capacity crowd of 75,000, who had come to witness the 500th football match to take place at the venue. Their main threat was Arjen Robben; however, the opener had Brazilian roots. Douglas Costa whipped a delightful ball into the box after some delightful footwork and Lewandowski fired home from close range.

TSG keeper Oliver Baumann kept them in the game after the break as the Bavarians flooded forward, in the hope of adding to the lead. This tactic almost proved costly after 56 minutes though, as Kramaric stole the ball from Kimmich but fired wide when placed. This profligacy was punished moments later when Lewandowski converted after great work from Lahm.
