Bayern München and Werder Bremen remain in DFB Cup

France midfielder Franck Ribery's return from injury provided the icing on the cake as Bayern Munich reached the last 16 of the DFB Cup with a 2-0 win at home to second division 1. FC Nürnberg on Wednesday. Bayern gave their fans an enjoyable evening as an early goal from Miroslav Klose set them up for an easy win over their Bavarian rivals.

Ribery, playing his first match since suffering an ankle injury at Euro 2008, came off the bench with 25 minutes to go and Bayern soon added the clinching second through Tim Borowski. Last season's double winners were joined in the last 16 by fellow heavyweights Hamburger SV, who beat Bochum 2-0, and VfB Stuttgart, who came through 2-0 against Arminia Bielefeld.

VfL Wolfsburg strolled to a 7-0 win over amateurs Oberneuland but 1899 Hoffenheim, enjoying life in second place in the Bundesliga, went out 3-1 at second division Freiburg.

Schalke, Bremen and Leverkusen also progressed

Werder Bremen survived a scare to beat third division Erzgebirge Aue 2-1 and make it through to the last 16 of the DFB Cup on Tuesday. Werder found their latest away game a much tougher assignment, as Aue took the lead with a dream long-range strike from Fabian Mueller early on. The five-times Cup winners got back on level terms when a Claudio Pizarro free kick evaded everyone and drifted in at the far post. Markus Rosenberg grabbed a second for Werder after the break and they managed to hold on despite relentless attacks from the home side.

Germany defender Heiko Westermann hit two second-half goals to seal Schalke 04's 2-0 win over Hanover 96 and put the Royal Blues into the German Cup's third round.

Bundesliga strugglers Energie Cottbus made the third round by converting all three of the penalties they were rewarded to claim a 3-0 win over Borussia Moechengladbach as Italian midfielder Ervin Skela slotted home two second-half spot-kicks.

Bayer Leverkusen made the third round with a 2-0 win at second division Augsburg while 1860 Munich beat Duisburg 5-4 on penalties.

There were two minor upsets among the seven ties on Tuesday, with Eintracht Frankfurt going out 2-1 in extra time at home to second division Hansa Rostock and Cologne losing 3-1 at second division Mainz.
