Augsburg thrash Hamburg as Hoffenheim go third

FC Augsburg produced a sterling display in front of their own fans to comfortably beat fellow relegation rivals Hamburger SV 4-0 on Sunday afternoon. Two first half goals from Halil Altintop set Manuel Baum’s side on their way before Philipp Max added a third midway through the second period. Substitute Raul Bobadilla put the icing on the cake with a fourth late on.

The win moves Augsburg above their relegation rivals into thirteenth in the league, while Hamburger SV drop into the relegation play-off place on goal difference behind Wolfsburg, four points clear of Ingolstadt below them.

Hübner heads Hoffenheim into third

A late header from Benjamin Hübner was enough for TSG Hoffenheim to beat Eintracht Frankfurt in Sinsheim to round out Matchday 31 in the Bundesliga. The defender rose highest to head home Sebastian Rudy’s last minute corner and put Julian Nagelsman’s side up into third place in the table.

Frankfurt, who made five changes from the side who reached the DFB Pokal final after a penalty shootout win against Gladbach on Tuesday, defended strongly for the majority of the game and restricted the hosts to relatively little save for an effort from Nadem Amiri which struck the frame of the goal.

The result sees Hoffenheim climb one point above Dortmund into the automatic Champions League places, while Frankfurt remain 11th, four points off Werder in sixth and five off Hertha in fifth.
