Benjamin Hübner to become new assistant coach of German national team

Benjamin Hübner will become the new assistant coach of the German national team. The 35-year-old, who is currently assistant coach of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, will replace Sandro Wagner in Julian Nagelsmann’s coaching team after Wagner leaves the role at his own request following the finals of the UEFA Nations League at the start of June. Hübner will begin his tenure as assistant coach alongside Benjamin Glück and Mads Buttgereit (assistant coach for set pieces) on 1st July 2025. He has signed an initial contract valid for three years.
Benjamin Hübner: “Being able to work for the national team is a huge honour. I’m really looking forward to my new role as part of this coaching team. The most successful period of my career at Hoffenheim came under Julian Nagelsmann, it helped shape me as a player but also as an assistant coach later on in my career. I’m therefore really excited for our first games in September and naturally the World Cup next year, where we will give our absolute best.”
Julian Nagelsmann: “I know Benni really well from our three years together in Hoffenheim. He was always a true team player, who was desperate to help the team be successful and he always put personal interests aside. Even as a player, he thought strategically and was a leader both on and off the pitch. It’s precisely these qualities, along with his experience as a player, that make him an excellent addition to our coaching staff. That’s why I’m really looking forward to working with Benni again now with the national team.”
Sporting director Rudi Völler: “Alongside his proven qualities as an assistant coach, Benjamin Hübner brings a strong understanding of players’ needs thanks to his many years as a professional footballer. That’s important, and the trust between him and Julian is very strong due to their successful time together in Hoffenheim. We’re looking forward to having Benjamin on board – he really impressed Andreas Rettig and myself in our discussions. Benjamin will be a valuable addition to our entire coaching team alongside Benjamin Glück, contributing his individual strengths. But first, playing a good final tournament in the Nations League with Sandro Wagner would be a great send-off for Sandro and a wonderful transition.”
Managing director for sport Andreas Rettig: “I would like to pay a big thank you to TSG Hoffenheim for their professional and cooperative support. We’re pleased that we were quickly able to bring clarity to this important role and secure a great coaching talent in Benjamin Hübner.”
Benjamin Hübner, who comes from a family of footballers, played 122 Bundesliga games in total for FC Ingolstadt and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. Julian Nagelsmann was his head coach at Hoffenheim from 2016 to 2019 and they played in both the Champions League and the Europa League during this period. In December 2022, the former captain and centre-back had to end his career due to injury. Hübner, who then completed the UEFA CFM, became part of the coaching team for Hoffenheim’s U19s, who won the German title and the DFB-Pokal in that same season. He then stepped up to the first team to be their assistant coach in February 2024.
