World XI: Kroos, Özil and Schweinsteiger all nominated

Three World Champions from Germany will be hoping that they will make it into FIFA’s Team of the Year. Toni Kroos (Real Madrid), Mesut Özil (FC Arsenal) and Bastian Schweinsteiger (Bayern München) have all been included as part of the 15 man “shortlist” of midfielders, from which players across the world can choose from. Spain’s Xabi Alonso, from Bayern München, has also been nominated.

Ahead of the strikers being announced, seven Germany World Cup winners have already been nominated: Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer (Bayern), his club teammates Philipp Lahm and Jerome Boateng, Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund), along with the three midfielders. Neuer is one of five nominees, whilst there are 20 candidates to choose from in defence.

The Team of the Year will be chosen by players from around the world. According to FIFA, there will be approximately ten thousand players voting. They will choose one goalkeeper, four defenders, three midfielders and three strikers. The finalists have been chosen by international player association FIFPro, as well as FIFA. The eleven winners will be announced on 12th January 2015 in Zurich. Neuer and Lahm were both included in the Team of the Year for 2013.
