World Champion Höwedes is Revier Footballer of the Year

World Champion Benedikt Höwedes has been voted as Revier Footballer of the Year 2014. The award is voted for by the 50 best managers in the Ruhr region and is presented by magazine RevierSport. Schalke 04’s captain was chosen ahead of Mats Hummels from Borussia Dortmund, with Schalke teammate Ralf Fährmann finishing in third. Last year’s winner was BVB star Marco Reus.

Höwedes was a permanent fixture in Joachim Löw’s team at the World Cup in Brazil. The 26-year-old played in all seven games at left-back and played a major part in the DFB-Team’s fourth World Cup title thanks to his strong performances.
